Teaching and Learning Committee advises and makes recommendations to the Academic Board and/or other University bodies or officers as appropriate on matters relating to teaching and learning and assessment in the University, including:

  • means of measuring and improving the quality of teaching and learning as articulated in the University’s Strategic Plan 2022-2025,
  • methods to enhance and improve the student learning experience, including the physical and virtual environment,
  • means of encouraging and rewarding high quality teaching and learning, and
  • matters arising through liaison with relevant external bodies.

As of 1 January 2024, the Teaching and Learning is to be disestablished, with a new Teaching, Learning and Student Experience Committee established in its place.

Terms of reference

The role of the Teaching and Learning Committee is to:

  • monitor, advise and make recommendations to the Academic Board and/or other University bodies or officers as appropriate on:
    • matters relating to teaching and learning and assessment in the University, including means of measuring and improving the quality of teaching and learning and academic integrity as articulated in the University’s Strategic Plan;
    • methods to enhance and improve the student learning experience, including the physical and virtual environment;
    • means of encouraging and rewarding high quality teaching and learning; and
    • matters arising through liaison with relevant external bodies.
  • advise the Academic Board on any issue or policy brought to it by officers of the University (e.g. Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation);
  • consider nominations for the Awards for Teaching Excellence, the Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning and the Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning and to periodically review the procedures for the awards.

Administrative arrangements

  • If the Chair is absent from any meeting of the Committee, the Chair will appoint another member to Chair that meeting. If the Chair is unexpectedly absent from any meeting of the Committee, members of the Committee present at that meeting will appoint a member as Chair for that meeting.
  • The term of membership for the elected members of the Academic Board nominated by Academic Board Standing Committee is two years.
  • Representatives from faculties are appointed by the executive dean on an annual basis.
  • The recipient of Awards and Commendations for Teaching Excellence is appointed for one year.
